The Snake (2016)
A short animation commissioned by Creative Industries Trafford for the Waterside 1-0 Micro Commission series exhibited at Waterside Arts Centre in Sale. The commission called for a project that was already in progress and the animation was developed from a series of etchings made at Hot Bed Press in 2014.

Inspired by John Steinbeck’s mysterious short story ‘The Snake’ the work developed from printmaking through to digital animation. Etchings were incorporated into the digital animation alongside drawings and hand-rendered textures. The original story is set in a biological laboratory and the content of the animation has been shaped and developed to reflect the descriptions of the lab interior and experiments described. The languid motion of the snake in contrast with the struggling mouse conveys the sense of unease that is present throughout the text. The work was exhibited at the Waterside in January 2016.
